FAQ

What tasks can PostgreSQL be used for?

PostgreSQL is a universal, open source, enterprise-level object-relational database that supports relational SQL queries and non-relational JSON. It is a very stable open source multi-platform database management system.

PostgreSQL is used in many industries, wherever large and complex databases need to be managed. It is used by such giants as Sony, Huawei, Alibaba, Instagram, Tripadvisor, Hitachi, Yandex, Skype, Reddit, Amazon Redshift, FlightAware and many others, including governmental ones.

CRM and ERP-systems, automated banking systems, statistics tracking systems with a large flow of small operations are organized on PostgreSQL: document management automation, warehousing, accounting. PostgreSQL is used for data extraction from various sources, its transformation and loading into the target system or data warehouse, data sampling and analysis, Business intelligence solutions and financial planning products.

What tasks does a PostgreSQL database management service provider undertake?

Managed Service for PostgreSQL - provides a ready-to-use PostgreSQL database management system, whose cluster uses cloud architecture for hosting.

You can focus on working with the database, enjoy all its benefits, and technical issues on the organization of the database cluster and its operation we will take care of.

Our area of responsibility includes:

  • database cluster deployment and its preliminary configuration;
  • monitoring and management of the cluster
  • scaling of the cluster;
  • ensuring high availability and fault tolerance of the database;
  • data backup;
  • ensuring data security and restricting access through authorization and encryption;
  • maintaining and repairing the infrastructure on which the cluster is hosted;
  • providing technical support and access to technical documentation on the service.

How is the backup of database clusters organized?

Full backup of the database cluster by default is performed automatically once a day between 1:00 AM and 5:00 AM GMT+4. Every 30 seconds are saved to the database cluster transaction logs, which allows you to restore the cluster state at any point in time within the backup storage period, except for the transactions of the last 30 seconds that have not yet been saved to the logs.

What restrictions does PostgreSQL place on the size of the database and its elements?

At the moment PostgreSQL has the following limitations:

  • maximum database size: no limits;
  • maximum table size: 32 Tbytes;
  • maximum record size: 1.6 Tbytes;
  • maximum field size: 1 Gbyte;
  • maximum records in a table: no restrictions;
  • maximum fields in a record: 250 - 1600, depending on field types;
  • maximum indexes in the table: no limitations.

Can a customer change the PostgreSQL DBMS configuration without creating a new cluster, for example, change the number of vCPUs or the amount of RAM?

Yes, you can increase the vCPU, RAM and disk size parameters in the control panel in a few clicks. Decreasing the above parameters is available by contacting your manager or through the ticket system.

What happens if the DBMS version is no longer supported by the developer?

If the DBMS version you are using is no longer supported by the developer, you will still have access to your data. However, in this case, the creation of new cluster nodes will not be available and other features may be restricted. The client is notified by e-mail and in his personal cabinet about automatic upgrade to the nearest supported version, about the timing of the work and availability of databases. Such upgrade will be performed even if the client has disabled automatic upgrade.

The client is notified about minor version update at least 7 days in advance, about major version update at least 1 month in advance. After receiving such notification, the customer should check the software interacting with PostgreSQL for compatibility with the new version. If necessary, the customer should take steps to ensure compatibility with the new version.

I need superuser privileges for PostgreSQL hosts, is this possible?

No, we do not provide superuser rights for cluster hosts to Managed Service for PostgreSQL customers, only PostgreSQL database administrator privileges.
